In 2018, there was a global supply shortage of the most popular family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) method: injectable contraceptives. To overcome this obstacle, the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project took a calculated logistical approach and averted stockouts in all USAID-supported countries. Recognizing that this was not sustainable, in March 2019, USAID and GHSC-PSM introduced a generic brand version of the injectable contraceptive for the first time in 40 years.
